Volunteer Read Aloud Program with Upper St Clair Library

Another great way to volunteer. It could be both for Golden Anchor as well as Service for Sight Hours!

Thank you for your interest in our volunteer read-aloud program!

We’re currently running one regular weekly Read-Aloud session at Grand Residence in Upper St Clair, on Wednesdays from 11-11:45am. We’re also about to start a weekly session at Friendship Village, which will be on Fridays from 3-3:45pm. We’ll be starting with the Friendship Village sessions towards the end of the month, likely on July 27.

We usually aim to have 3-5 volunteers each session, so that we can take turns reading. These are group settings which usually draw around 15-20 attendees. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own reading material, or use some of the material we bring. The residents tend to enjoy relatively short, simpler pieces – stories about animals, personal essays, humor, reminiscences about the old days, local news, etc.

I should let you know that while many of the residents we serve have some degree of vision impairment, this isn’t the case for everyone, and we don’t explicitly focus on this population. I expect that the Friendship Village group in particular will include a number of individuals with full vision.

Thanks again for reaching out! If individuals from your group would like to contact me to set up a time to volunteer, they’re welcome to email or call me.

Best,
Walker
