See note below from the father of a DG member at Penn State that I met this summer. They host an event every year to help the DG chapter raise funds for THON. I know that Billie Dee’s event is the same night. However, I thought you could share the info about this event in case anyone wants to go in the afternoon or send a check.

On Saturday, November 8th beginning at 12 Noon, I will host a Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser at Jergel’s with the proceeds donated to THON (the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon), which benefits the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Credit will be given to Delta Gamma Sorority and the Smeal MBA Association. Bands scheduled to appear are Velveeta, a band from State College, and Cue Ball, a local band that includes two former Penn State football players and a former member of the marching Blue Band. There will be a third band. We will have silent and live auction items at the fundraiser also.
For those of you not familiar with THON, it is the largest student run philanthropy in the world with over 15,000 Penn State student volunteers. Penn State students work hard all year long to make a difference in the lives of children and their parents. You can go towww.thon.org to read about THON and you can find many videos on YouTube about THON. Just search in YouTube for THON 2015 Promo and you will see this year’s video. If you want to learn about the history of THON and see an incredible video, search in YouTube for Why We Dance: The Story of THON. It’s pretty long, but well worth watching.
Approximately 96% of the money raised by THON is donated to the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. This Fund covers all medical expenses not covered by insurance for children with pediatric cancer treated at Hershey. Parents NEVER get a bill thanks to the dedication of the students at Penn State. Additionally, since the money raised exceeds the non-insured medical costs, the balance is used for pediatric cancer research to find a cure, so that one day no parent will ever hear, “Your child has cancer.” In February 2014 THON raised over 13.3 million dollars. I need your help so that THON 2015 will raise even more money than THON 2014.
So how can you help?
Personal and corporate monetary contributions are greatly appreciated. We have three levels of donations,
***Gold Level: If you or your company can donate $500 or more, your name or company name will continually be appearing on our TV monitors at Jergel’s during the fundraiser, and I will constantly mention your name on our PA system during the fundraiser.
***Silver Level: For a contribution of $250 or more, you will be mentioned as a donor during the fundraiser.
***The Melina $23 Level Contribution: This is the monetary donation I hope everybody will make. Melina is a 7 year old girl who became involved when she saw her mother put money in a THON can and heard how the donation would help kids who are sick with cancer. Melina then donated the only $23 she had in the world to THON, because she wanted “to help little kids who are sick.”
I know everybody has $23 to spare. Will you match Melina’s donation?
We will have a silent auction and a live auction. Do you have anything to donate? Anything Penn State, Pirates, Steelers or Penguins related sells well in auctions. Merchandise, wine baskets, hotel stays also sell well in auctions. Do you have a condo at Seven Springs or even Colorado you could donate for a ski vacation this winter? Do you have a condo in Florida you could donate for a warm, sunny vacation this winter? Do you have excess airline miles or excess hotel points you’d be willing to donate, so we can auction off a trip? A few years ago I went to London with a friend who had won the trip at a fundraiser. The roundtrip and hotel stay were donated miles and points. If you don’t have excess miles or points, do you know someone who does and would be willing to donate them. Some of your miles and points will expire, so donate them to this fundraiser. If you donate an item we can auction off in a silent or live auction, your name or company name will be mentioned constantly as one of our auction sponsors.
What else can you do? Definitely come to Jergel’s on November 8th. Donate at the door; bid on auction items; participate in a 50/50 raffle and have a great time with music and fun and frivolity. At THON, Penn State students dance for 46 hours. Yes, they are on their feet for 46 hours—no sitting, no sleeping—just moving for 46 hours. Would you like to dance for 12 hours from 12:30 in the afternoon to 12:30 in the morning? I’m looking for people who want to dance for 12 hours and raise money. Prizes will be given to dancers who raise the most money. Call me for more details.
If you can’t make it to Jergel’s on November 8th, please make your donation checks payable to “Penn State Dance Marathon” and mail them to my attention at Jergel’s Rhythm Grille, 103 Slade Lane, Warrendale, PA 15086. The total amount raised will be revealed at approximately 12:45 AM, Sunday morning.
Please contact me for more information and please see the Facebook page for our event. I want your help…please donate in one form or another!
All the best,
George
